May 12th Commemoration

posted 2 May 2012, 12:06 by Shane West

On Thursday May 10th, 1945, a Short Stirling LK147 from 196 Squadron with a crew of 6 men and 14 members of The Border Regiment 1 Airborne Battalion crashed while attempting to land at Gardermoen. All on board were killed and buried in a small cemetery near the crash site. In late November 1945, six months after the crash, the 20 men were exhumed and transferred to Vestre gravlund civil Cemetery in Oslo, where they rest today.

Two of the crew on the flight were Australian airmen Flying Officer John Breed and Warrant Officer Hugh Kilday.

The local historical society in Ullensaker, The military historical society and the senior adviser for cultural affairs in Nannestad have formed a very active committee and have arranged for a commemoration ceremony to take place at the memorial site near the Aviation Museum at Gardermoen. Family members of the Australian and British servicemen killed in the crash will be present at the ceremony, together with representatives from the Australian and British Embassies and the Australian High Commission in London.

The ceremony starts at 15:30 on May 12th at the Aviation Museum (located near the Clarion Hotel at Gardermoen). There will be an opportunity to learn more about 'Operation Doomsday' and the liberation of Norway in May 1945 together with a guided tour of the Aviation Museum. You can also learn more about the crash in the attached document.
